Dear European feminists,
On behalf of the parliamentary group on Population and Development, Reproductive Health and Rights of the Lithuanian Republic and on behalf of all educated and progressively thinking women and men of Lithuania I address you and ask for a moral support and solidarity in stopping the attempt of the conservative parliamentarians and social organizations to ban abortion in our country. The project of the law to safeguard an unborn life, to force women give birth even to an abnormal child, to criminalize abortion is backed up by the Lithuanian Catholic Church, which negates women reproductive rights.
After regaining political independence and becoming a member of the European Union Lithuania ratified all international conventions, passed new laws, which eliminate all forms of discrimination against women. The right to gender equality is a fundamental principle of human rights law and an essential value of the European Reform Treaty. Women reproductive rights are a part of human rights. Therefore each woman and each couple should freely and responsibly decide the number, spacing and timing of their children. No narrow-minded politicians, no Catholic Church authorities have the right to ban family planning, to stop access to modern methods of fertility regulation and sexuality education.
The decision to carry a pregnancy to term or seek an abortion is the right of a woman, guaranteed by the international and national laws of life and health, freedom from discrimination, autonomy in reproductive decision making and protection of the right to woman‘s physical integrity. The parliament of the Lithuanian Republic banning or restricting abortion will have to take responsibility for forcing Lithuanian women to undergo life - threatening clandestine abortions or for the early deaths of the fertile Lithuanian women.
The lust for political or church power betraying fundamental human rights and values, subordination of women to men, defence of conservative, traditional social dogms, stereotypical mentality in family annd society throw the new states, members of the EU backward in a cultural and social life. Thus the whole European community is condemned to backwardness. All progressively thinking women and men of Europe should not put up with that.

Au nom du groupe parlementaire „Population et Développement, Droits et Santé reproductive“ de la République de Lithuanie, au nom de toutes les femmes et hommes éclairés et progressistes de ce pays, je m‘adresse à vous pour solliciter votre soutien moral et votre solidarité pour bloquer la tentative de. s députés conservateurs et d‘un certain nombre d‘organismes de pénaliser l‘avortement .
Le projet de loi qui vise à préserver la vie du foetus, à obliger les femmes à donner naissance à un enfant anormal , a criminaliser l‘avortement, est le fait de l‘eglise catholique lithuanienne qui nie les droits reproductifs des femmes.
Après avoir recouvré son indépendance politique et être entrée dans l‘Union Européenne, la Lithuanie a ratifié toutes les conventions internationales, édicté de nouvelles lois qui visent à éliminer toute forme de discrimination à l‘encontre des femmes.
L‘égalité entre les femmes et les hommes est un principe fondamental des droits humains et une valeur essentielle du nouveau traité européen .Les droits reproductfs des femmes sont partie intégrante des droits humains . Chaque femme, chaque couple doit pouvoir décider librement et en toute responsabilité du lieu, du moment des naissances et du nombre de ses enfants.
Ce ne sont ni des politiciens à l‘esprit étroit, ni l‘église catholique qui peuvent entraver le droit au planning familial, l‘acces aux méthodes modernes de régulation des naissances et à l‘éducation sexuelle
.La décision de mener une grossesse à terme ou d‘avorter est pour les femmes un droit garanti par les lois- nationales et internationales- ,à la non discrimination, à l‘autonomie ,à la maitrise de leurs droits reproductifs, à la protection de leur intégrité physique .
Si le parlement lithuanien criminalise l‘avortement ou limite ce droit il devra assumer la responsabilité du recoursdes femmes lithuaniennes aux avortements clandestins et en conséquence des morts prématurées de femmes en capacité d‘avoir des enfants .
La soif de pouvoir politique et religieux au détriment des droits humains et des valeurs fondamentales, pour la défense des dogmes les plus réactionnaires, des mentalités familiales et sociales les plus rétrogrades, plonge les nouveaux Etats membres de l‘Union Européenne, dans la régression culturelle et sociale et condammnent de ce fait l‘ensemble de l‘Europe au recul.
Tous les progressistes, femmes et hommes d‘Europe doivent réagir face à cette évolution.
